Bradley A. Coates was our firm's founder and the author of Hawaii's award winning family law treatise "Divorce With Decency." He formally retired from active practice of law after 40+ years as a family law attorney. His former practice emphasized domestic and family law cases including complex divorce actions, settlement, and mediation of family law matters.
Since opening the practice, Bradley has become one of the most esteemed lawyers in Hawaii. He’s been honored by Honolulu Magazine and won their “People’s Choice” Award for Best Divorce Lawyer. His recognition continued to grow, and he was later selected as “Best Divorce Lawyer” by the readers of Honolulu Weekly Newspaper as well. Additionally, he’s been repeatedly named to the coveted list of Hawaii’s Super Lawyers, an honor given to the top 5% of all Hawaii attorneys.
Outside of his courtroom work, Bradley has become a renowned author for five editions his book “Divorce With Decency” and his affiliate mediation practice by the same name. His book is nearly as decorated as he is, holding awards including the Hawaii Book Publisher’s Annual Ka Palapala Po’okela Award of Merit for Excellence in Guide and Reference Books.
In addition to founding our firm, Bradley participates in pro bono work and was the founder and president of U.S. Arbitration and Mediation of Hawaii and the Pacific, Inc.
Bradley is a member of the California and Hawaii State Bars. He was also licensed to practice law before the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia. He is a respected member of the Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections of the Hawaii State Bar. In his early career, Brad was a member of the Micronesian Constitutional Convention legal staff in 1975, and he served as Staff Attorney to the Congress of Micronesia from 1976 to 1978.
